Why do my brakes make noise after I change them?

Oceanside Motorsports • January 28, 2024

If your brakes are producing noise shortly after replacement , various factors could be at play. It’s not uncommon for new brake pads to undergo a bedding-in process, resulting in temporary noise. However, improper installation, issues with calipers, rotor conditions, or the absence of anti-squeal components can contribute to persistent noise.

Ensuring correct installation, proper rotor maintenance, and addressing any caliper or hardware issues are crucial steps. If the noise persists or raises concerns, seeking the expertise of a qualified mechanic for a thorough inspection is recommended to identify and rectify the specific cause.

Common Causes

If your brakes are making noise after you’ve recently changed them, there could be a few reasons for this issue. Here are some common causes.

  1. Brake Pad Material

Some brake pad materials are inherently noisier than others. Metallic or semi-metallic brake pads, while effective in stopping power, can produce more noise than ceramic brake pads. If you switched to a different type of brake pad, the noise may be normal for that material.

  1. Bedding-In Process

New brake pads and rotors need a “bedding-in” or “break-in” process to optimize their performance. During this period, you may experience some noise as the components settle and form a proper mating surface. This noise is typically temporary and should diminish as the bedding-in process completes.

  1. Improper Installation

If the brake pads were not installed correctly, it could lead to noise issues. Ensure that the pads are properly seated, and all hardware is installed according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

  1. Rotor Condition

If the brake rotors were not properly resurfaced or replaced, uneven surfaces can cause noise. It’s essential to follow manufacturer recommendations for rotor maintenance or replacement when changing brake pads.

  1. Anti-Squeal Shims or Lubrication

Missing or improperly installed anti-squeal shims, as well as insufficient lubrication on contact points, can result in noisy brakes. These components are crucial for dampening vibrations and preventing noise.

  1. Caliper Issues

Problems with the calipers, such as sticking or uneven pressure, can contribute to brake noise. Ensure that the calipers move freely and apply even pressure on both sides of the rotor.

If the noise persists or if you are unsure about the cause, it’s recommended to have your brakes inspected by a qualified mechanic. They can identify the source of the noise and address any issues to ensure your brakes function properly and quietly.
